The Golf Grip Journey!
It all started around the age 7 or 8 when I found my Dad’s old hickory shaft golf clubs in the basement. I would play with them and not think much of it. I started to get more interested as I witnessed my neighbor across the street always outside practicing chipping on his side yard. Mr. S. was an exceptionally good golfer. He and his wife were members at Jumping Brook Country Club in Neptune, NJ. My friends and I started playing in his yard and that is where I learned about Arnie Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player (The Big 3), as my interest in golf began to grow.
When I turned thirteen, I was old enough to caddie and where else would I go, but to Jumping Brook, which was within a short bike ride or walk from my house. As a caddie I learned the rules, etiquette of the game and got to caddie for and watch some of the best amateur golfers at the Jersey Shore. The course was closed on Mondays to members but was open to the caddies. We could play from sunrise to sundown if we showed respect for the golf course, which we all did as we knew even at a young age, it was a privilege to be able to play all day on one of the finest private golf courses in the area for FREE. It did not get much better than to be a Jumping Brook caddie. The stories and memories of so many great pals I caddied with will live with me forever.
At Neptune High School I played JV golf my junior year and by my senior year I was on varsity, with two of my best pals (Jeff H and John K). It was amazing. During golf season, we would go to school for ½ a day and then be driven to the best golf courses in Monmouth and Ocean County. We qualified for the State Tournament, but did not make it too far, but again the memories of playing with my pals at a competitive high level, was priceless!
Many years later I ventured into a retail golf business with my brother-in-law (Pat D.). Double Eagle Discount Golf was born. We opened a golf store that looked like a pro shop. We were nestled in between four golf courses in Monroe Township, NJ, all within 5 minutes of each other. Our location was perfect. It was during that time that we learned how to re-grip, repair and make custom golf clubs. The business was open for four years.
Fast forward to 2015. I had an idea to offer a golf club re-gripping service that would be focused on quality service, discount prices and convenience. The Golf Grip, LLC was born in February of 2015.
The first year I offered “free” pick-up and delivery in the local area. In year two, I started to envision a Mobile On-Site Service. I knew what I wanted, but I needed lots of help. My good friend Mark A. stepped up for me and made me a re-grip work bench specifically designed for my 1991 Jeep. The workbench is a model of perfection and made from “friendship”. In the beginning of 2019, I was on my way with a new offering - an On-Site Re-Gripping Service at your Home or Business to go along with free pick-up and delivery in the local area.
As I was closing out 2020, I was introduced to the owners of Swing Loose Indoor Golf at Bell Works on Crawford’s Corners Road in Holmdel, NJ. I was asked if I would be interested in establishing an on-site mobile re-gripping service at their location. It was a great opportunity, but I would need help again to construct a new mobile re-gripping station, I needed Mark A. to do his magic one more time. I contacted Mark and we paid a visit to Swing Loose. Several weeks later a newly constructed mobile workstation was built and put on-site at Swing Loose. The Golf Grip is now on-site at Swing Loose providing re-gripping/repair services at this fabulous indoor golf facility, located less than five minutes off exit 114 on the Garden State Parkway.
